A fashion designer creates new styles for clothing or accessories. They can develop original designs or build upon existing ones to reflect popular trends or changing needs. Fashion designers typically start with an idea for a garment, which they then communicate through drawings or computer generated visuals. Once the design is approved, production can begin.

The next step is to select the materials that will be used to create the garment. Once the materials are chosen, the designer must develop a pattern for the garment. Patterns are traditionally created by hand, but some designers now use computer-aided design (CAD) programs to develop patterns.

After the pattern is created, it must be cut from the selected material. The fashion designer then sews the garment together by hand or with a sewing machine. The final step is to assess how well the garment looks on a model and make any necessary adjustments before it is ready to be sold” (“Fashion Designer Job Description, Career as a Fashion Designer, Salary, Employment”).
