Even though Payless sells low-cost goods all the time, she will still wait until her check arrives.
And the check never came on time. The author would never forget those moments when he and his grandma would go out to buy food, but she had no money. And she always made sure to have a lot of change with her, in case of an emergency. Another thing that the author remembers is that his grandma always liked to eat sweets. She would always have a jar of cookies or a cake in the house. And she would always offer him some, even though he was never really hungry. But he would still take a cookie or two, just because she offered them to him.
Grandma was always a very quiet person, who would rock back and forth in her chair and hum to herself. And even though she was always humming, she never sang out loud. She would only sing when she was alone, or when she was with her grandson. And even though she was always humming, she never seemed to be happy.
