Every individual’s life is filled with challenges that must be overcome. Some people choose to run from a problem, while others choose to break through whatever is holding them back. I’ve always felt that if anyone truly desires something badly enough, they will devote every effort necessary to achieve it.
This mindset has definitely been put to the test during my time in high school. I was never a very good student. I always struggled with focus and paying attention in class. My grades were never really that great, but I was able to get by. However, when I entered my junior year, things started to spiral out of control. The workload increased and I found myself struggling to keep up. My grades began to suffer and I was constantly stressed out.
I knew that something had to change if I wanted to be successful in my senior year and beyond. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands and really commit myself to my education. I started studying more and working harder on assignments. And finally, after a lot of effort, my grades began to improve.
This experience has taught me that no matter how difficult something may seem, it is always possible to overcome it if you’re willing to put in the work. Adversity can actually be a good thing because it makes you stronger and better prepared for future challenges. So next time you’re faced with a setback, don’t give up – use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
Through years of perseverance, study, and self-motivation, I have been able to overcome my adversity: stuttering. Many individuals attempt to disguise their speech impediment with flowery terminology such as “blocking,” “difficult speech,” or “mild disfluency.” To a stutterer, no matter how experts or professionals label this condition, it is never trouble-free. Every day I confront stuttering with the confidence and commitment to communicate properly.
I was diagnosed with a severe stutter at the age of four. My mother was my biggest cheerleader and she encouraged me to never give up. I would often get frustrated and want to give up, but her words would echo in my head: “You can do it!” When I was younger, I attended speech therapy sessions weekly, in addition to going to a special summer camp for kids who stutter. While these treatments helped me become more confident in my abilities, I still struggled on a daily basis.
I remember one incident in particular that made me question why I bothered trying to overcome my stutter. I was in the second grade and had to read aloud in front of the class. I was so nervous that my hands were shaking and I could feel the sweat trickling down my back.
When it was my turn, I stood up on shaky legs and started to read. The words wouldn’t come out properly and I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. I wanted to run out of the room and hide, but I forced myself to keep going. When I finally finished, the entire class applauded and I felt a sense of pride. In that moment, I realized that even though it was hard, overcoming my adversity was worth it.
Nowadays, I rarely give into my stutter. Sure, there are still times when I struggle to get the words out, but I don’t let that stop me. I’ve come to accept my stutter as a part of who I am and I’ve learned how to use it to my advantage. For example, when I’m nervous or under pressure, my stutter actually goes away!

Not only that, but my stutter has never prevented me from doing anything I wanted to do. Even as a child, I knew I couldn’t allow this roadblock to get in the way of my success. This isn’t to imply that my stutter was never noticed. Throughout my life, I’ve had to put up with a lot of bullying and embarrassment, but I’ve learned to simply brush it off and continue going forward. To be honest, these unpleasant situations have helped me work harder and achieve more, allowing me to develop greater compassion for others.
In many ways, I am grateful for my stutter because it has made me the person I am today. It has taught me to be resilient and to never give up, even when things seem impossible. Additionally, overcoming this adversity has given me a greater sense of empathy for others who might be facing their own challenges.
