I was confident in my writing, especially my capacity to produce high-quality papers after a semester of seasoning at university and years of high school study. The lessons from the pink workbook and comments on my essays, on the other hand, dispelled this notion. Inappropriate words were strewn throughout my work; I had inconsistent punctuation; and I performed a sloppy job of changing back and forth between present tense and past tense. I’d daydreamed on numerous occasions about enhancing my writing and adopting a more sophisticated tone.
After this class, I feel as if those dreams have turned into achievable goals. Self-assessment is a huge part of becoming not only a better writer, but a better thinker as well.
Aside from the technical aspects of writing that I learned, I also became more in touch with the way I think and how to better organize my thoughts on paper. I am a very linear thinker, and my papers often reflect that. I tend to write in a straight line, starting from the beginning of an idea and ending at the end with no stops in between. This class has taught me the importance of taking breaks, brainstorming, and thinking about my audience when writing. I have learned how to better structure my papers, and how to make sure that my papers flow smoothly from one idea to the next.
I have also become more aware of the way I use language, both in terms of the words I choose and the tone I take. I am guilty of using “filler” words like ” stuff” or ” things” when I write, and this class has helped me to nip that habit in the bud. I have also learned to be more conscious of the tone I take in my writing. In academic writing, it is important to maintain a level of objectivity and detachment, which is something I struggle with at times. This class has taught me how to strike the perfect balance between sounding too robotic and sounding too personal.
Overall, this class has been a valuable learning experience for me, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to improve my writing skills. I have learned a great deal about the technical aspects of writing, as well as the thought processes that go into producing a quality piece of writing. I am confident that I can take what I have learned in this class and apply it to my future academic and professional endeavors.
Self-assessment is a process of reflecting on one’s own work in order to identify strengths and weaknesses, as well as areas for improvement. This class has helped me to become more aware of my own writing style and the areas where I need to improve. In terms of technical skills, I need to work on my punctuation and grammar, as well as my ability to vary my sentence structure. I also need to be more conscious of the words I choose, in order to avoid using “filler” words that do not add anything of value to my paper.
I now have the map I’ve been looking for to improve my writing thanks to the pink workbook and verbal instructions in class. This session helped me develop good habits such as submitting homework the day before or the next morning before attempting to improvise and submit it late at night. The course learning objectives offered a series of milestones to track in terms of learning throughout this class, as well as establishing my notion of writing and defining what writing entails.
Overall, I feel as if my writing has improved in this class and that is largely due to the learning objectives and listening to my professor’s advice.
The first objective was “composing texts using various rhetorical strategies” (ENC1101 Composition I). From what I can tell, a text is anything that conveys meaning and can be interpreted by the reader. A rhetorical strategy then is how the author uses the text to appeal to the audience. The modes of composition were exigence, invention, arrangement, style, memory and delivery which we talked about in class. This objective was important because it allowed me to understand how to write persuasively and for different audiences. It also helped me better understand my own writing style and what I can do to improve it.
The second objective was “engaging in inquiry-based research projects” (ENC1101 Composition I). This objective was important because it showed me how to go about finding sources and using them effectively in my papers. We talked aboutWikipedia and other websites being unreliable sources and that we should only use them for background information. This was a good lesson because it taught me to be more critical of the sources I use in my papers and to make sure that they are reliable. It also showed me how to properly cite my sources using MLA format.
The third objective was “developing an understanding of audience, purpose, and genre” (ENC1101 Composition I). This objective was important because it helped me understand why I am writing and who I am writing for. It is important to know the purpose of your paper before you start writing so that you can focus your thoughts and stay on track. It is also important to know your audience so that you can write in a way that appeals to them. For example, if you are writing for a business audience, you would use a different style than if you were writing for a scientific audience. The genre of a piece is the type of writing it is, such as an argumentative essay or a research paper.
The fourth objective was “using technology for composing, revising, editing, and publishing texts” (ENC1101 Composition I). This objective was important because it showed me how to use technology to help me with my writing. We talked about using Google Docs to share our papers with each other and the professor so that we could get feedback. We also talked about using grammar checkers and spell checkers to help us revise and edit our papers. This was a good lesson because it taught me how to use technology to help me with my writing.
The fifth objective was “demonstrating college-level communication through writing” (ENC1101 Composition I). This objective was important because it showed me what is expected of me in terms of writing at the college level. We talked about using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling in our papers. We also talked about using proper citation format and avoiding plagiarism. This was a good lesson because it taught me how to write at the college level and what is expected of me in terms of writing.
Overall, I feel like I have accomplished the objectives for this class. I have learned how to compose texts using various rhetorical strategies, engage in inquiry-based research projects, develop an understanding of audience, purpose, and genre, use technology for composing, revising, editing, and publishing texts, and demonstrate college-level communication through writing. I feel like my writing has improved as a result of these objectives and I am better prepared for future writing assignments.
