Self-Concept and Self-Esteem Essay

Is having a significant influence on young children’s self-concept and self-esteem in today’s culture, when everything is “what’s hot and what’s not”? In today’s world, where everything is “what’s hot and what’s not”, it has a huge influence on children’s self-concept. The term “self-concept” refers to people’s beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, and ideas about themselves, whereas “self-esteem” refers to their personal judgment of worthiness (392).

A person’s self-concept and self-esteem are developed during childhood and adolescence and continue to change and develop throughout one’s lifetime.

There are many factors that contribute to the development of a person’s self-concept and self-esteem. Education is a major factor in the development of self-concept and self-esteem. Physical attractiveness is another important factor in the development of self-concept and self-esteem, especially during adolescence. High school is a time when physical attractiveness becomes more important to teenagers and has a significant impact on their self-concept and self-esteem.

Self-concept and self-esteem are important for people of all ages. It is important for parents, educators, and other adults to be aware of the factors that contribute to the development of self-concept and self-esteem. They can then help children and adolescents develop a positive self-concept and healthy self-esteem.

After spending the evening with my five-year-old cousin, Sami, last week, I was interested in this topic. We were sitting down to eat supper when she declared, “Cali, I’m fat and ugly.” Well, I nearly fell off my chair. She was already cutting herself down at the age of five. “Physical appearance is the most powerful predictor of global self-esteem throughout childhood and adolescence,” according to research (398).

So, how can we build our children’s self-esteem? “Self-concept is the cognitive construction of the self that includes beliefs, images, and perceptions (395).” Education is a great way to learn more about oneself. It also helps to set goals and achieve them. “Achievement motivation is associated with high self-regard (396).” So, if we want our children to have high self-esteem, we should encourage them to be motivated and set goals.

Physical attractiveness is also important in building self-esteem. “High school students who rate themselves as attractive are more likely to have higher GPAs and college aspirations than those who do not (399).” So, it is important to teach our children that they are beautiful, no matter what.

However, according to our textbook, it’s difficult for children around my cousin’s age to express their sense of self. They frequently refer to their physical features, hobbies, family life, and so on (394). It never says that a young girl should think about herself in terms of her physical appearance.

It is only until high school where self-concept starts to revolve around physical appearance more (395).

During my Education and Family Diversity class, we learned about how different cultures view self-concept and how it develops. For example, in the United States, self-concept is said to develop from birth as we are constantly bombarded with messages about who we should be and what we should look like. We are also taught that our sense of self comes from within, whereas in collectivist cultures, such as those found in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, self-concept is said to come from our interactions with others and our place within a group.

It is interesting to think about how my cousin’s self-concept might be different if she were raised in a collectivist culture. She would likely see herself as part of a larger group, such as her family or community, and her sense of self would come from her role within that group.

It is important to remember that our self-concept is not set in stone and can change over time. Education, experiences, and relationships can all influence how we see ourselves. With this in mind, it is important to create a positive self-concept for ourselves and for our children.

Self-esteem is closely related to self-concept, but whereas self-concept refers to our perceptions of ourselves, self-esteem refers to our evaluation of those perceptions (396). In other words, self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves.

Self-esteem can be affected by many different factors, such as our physical attractiveness, achievements, and relationships. For example, people who are considered to be physically attractive tend to have higher self-esteem than those who are not considered to be physically attractive. This is because our society places a high value on physical appearance and often associates beauty with success.

Achievements can also affect our self-esteem. Accomplishments make us feel good about ourselves and increase our confidence. On the other hand, if we fail at something, our self-esteem can take a hit.

Finally, our relationships can also influence our self-esteem. People who have supportive and positive relationships tend to have higher self-esteem than those who do not. This is because having people in our lives who care about us and believe in us can help us to feel good about ourselves.

It is important to have a healthy self-esteem, as it can affect our mental and physical health, as well as our ability to succeed in life. People with low self-esteem are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems. They are also more likely to engage in risky behaviors, such as substance abuse, unprotected sex, and criminal activity.

So how can we improve our self-esteem? One way is to focus on our positive qualities and accomplishments. Another way is to surround ourselves with people who support and care about us. And finally, we can try to be more accepting of ourselves, flaws and all.

Improving our self-esteem is not always easy, but it is worth the effort. When we have a healthy self-esteem, we are more likely to be happy, successful, and physically healthy.

Adolescents and high school students are more likely to assess themselves, not children in kindergarten when it comes to making judgments. I believe that television, periodicals, novels, and the internet harm our youngsters’ self-esteem by implying that they are unattractive compared to the characters on their favorite TV programs.

I believe that the media is teaching children that they need to be a certain size, height and weight to be beautiful. When in reality, everyone is beautiful in their own way. Education also plays a role in self-concept and self esteem. If a child or adolescent gets good grades, they feel smart and confident. If they get bad grades, they may feel stupid and not good enough.

Physical attractiveness also plays a part in how we see ourselves. If we are considered attractive by our peers, we feel good about ourselves. However, if we are not considered attractive, we may feel self-conscious and ugly. Our self-concept and self esteem are constantly changing as we grow older and gain more life experiences.

In conclusion, self-concept and self-esteem are important in our lives. Education and physical attractiveness are two key factors in building self-esteem. We should encourage our children to be motivated and set goals. We should also teach them that they are beautiful, no matter what.
